Chaweng
Beach Popular Koh Samui beach town with nightlife and beaches
On Koh Samui, Chaweng is a long sandy bay lined with hotels, restaurants and nightlife; tourists come for swimming, beachside dining, water sports and an active evening scene.
Chaweng is the largest resort town and beach area on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand, and is the island’s main tourism hub. It is best known for its long, continuous beachfront and concentrated hospitality and entertainment infrastructure.
The area centers on Chaweng Beach, a broad white-sand shoreline backed by a dense strip of hotels, restaurants, bars and water-sports operators; the beach is the primary place for swimming, jet-skiing and paddle activities. The beachfront corridor also contains the island’s highest concentration of nightlife and dining options, with many accommodations within walking distance of the sand.
A short distance to the south is Chaweng Noi, a quieter bay favored by visitors seeking less development and a calmer atmosphere. The district also contains major retail and entertainment venues serving both day visitors and longer-stay tourists.
Originally a small fishing and agricultural settlement, Chaweng grew rapidly during Koh Samui’s tourism expansion from the late 20th century onward as hotels and tourist services were built along the bay. Development since the 1980s has transformed the shoreline into the island’s principal resort strip.
Chaweng sits on the eastern coast of Koh Samui, on the Gulf of Thailand, a few kilometres from Samui International Airport and connected by the island’s main ring road. The town is the primary coastal settlement on this side of the island and a short drive from other resort areas such as Lamai.
- Best time to visit: Best visited in the dry season from January to April when seas are calmer and rainfall is lowest.
- Airport access: A few kilometres from Samui International Airport, making it the island's primary arrival-area resort strip.
What to See #
- Chaweng Beach: A white-sand shoreline running along the main tourist district, used for swimming, sunbathing and watersports; the sand strip is the focal point for bars, restaurants and hotels.
- Chaweng Noi: A smaller, quieter bay immediately south of the main beach with shallower water and fewer commercial developments.
- Central Festival Samui: The island's largest shopping and entertainment complex located in the Chaweng area, providing retail, dining and cinema options.
