How to Get to Turaida Castle
From Riga: drive north on the A2/E77 toward Sigulda (about 50-60 km by road) and follow local signs to Turaida in the Gauja National Park; there is a small parking area near the castle. By public transport you can take the passenger train from Riga to Sigulda (about 1 hour) - from Sigulda station Turaida Castle is roughly 3.5-4 km to the east and is reachable by a short taxi ride or a 40-50 minute walk along local roads and park paths.
Tips for Visiting Turaida Castle
- Visit Turaida Castle in the late afternoon for warm light over the Gauja valley and fewer tour groups than at midday; climb the castle tower for the best panoramic views when it's open.
- Enter via the Turaida Museum Reserve main entrance (near the parking area on the road from Sigulda) and buy the combined ticket that covers the castle, Gutman's Cave and nearby exhibits to save time and money.
- Don't rush past the museum buildings - the small exhibitions and reconstructed historical interiors behind the courtyard explain local history that many visitors miss before heading straight to the tower and viewpoint.
