Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
Gulf of Guinea Coast & São Tomé (coastal Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, western DRC, São Tomé & Príncipe)
May brings the heaviest, most sustained rains along the Gulf coast and São Tomé - persistent showers, swollen rivers and very high humidity; some secondary roads become impassable. Libreville, Port-Gentil and coastal parts of western DRC are wettest; boat travel on the Congo River may be faster but launches and jetties are slipperier. Pack waterproof bags and expect damp conditions in town and jungle lodges; it’s low season for beach tourism.
Congo Basin Rainforest (central DRC, northern Republic of the Congo, southern Central African Republic)
May often remains one of the wettest months: near-constant humidity, frequent thunderstorms and swollen rivers that reshape local transport. Jungle camps can be very muddy and trekking becomes physically demanding; some conservation areas restrict access. Travellers should be flexible, expect flight delays, and be ready for simple accommodation and insect-heavy evenings.
Northern Sahelian Fringe (northern Cameroon, Chad, northern Central African Republic)
The onset of the rainy season commonly begins in May with the first reliable showers in southern parts of the fringe; Chad’s southern reaches and northern Cameroon see the landscape green briefly. Daytime temperatures drop a few degrees when storms arrive, creating relief from the pre-monsoon heat. Travellers should note that as rains strengthen, some dirt roads begin to degrade and river fords can become hazardous.
Great Lakes & Albertine Rift Highlands (Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRC - Goma, Bukavu, Virunga, and surrounding highlands)
May continues the wet pattern in many highland areas but mornings can be clearer and the forests beautifully lush; waterfalls and rivers are full, creating dramatic scenery for photographers. For gorilla permits and guided treks, be prepared for muddy approaches and greater exertion on trails. Accommodation is quieter and rates can be lower, but always confirm transfer logistics ahead of arrival.
Cameroon Highlands & Mount Cameroon (Bamenda Plateau, Mount Cameroon, western highlands)
May frequently brings some of the season’s heaviest rains to the western highlands, with saturated soils and trickier river crossings on approach routes to mountain trails. Buea and surrounding towns feel humid and wet, making long ascents more challenging; footpaths can erode after intense storms. If you choose to trek now, expect a physically demanding experience and take waterproof gear and good traction footwear.
