Gulf of Guinea Coast & São Tomé (coastal Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, western DRC, São Tomé & Príncipe)

Along the coastal strip from Douala to Libreville the year feels tropical and humid: January is typically the drier, sunniest pocket with temperatures in the high 20s-low 30s°C and relatively fewer downpours. São Tomé and the coastal mangroves are pleasantly warm but still humid, good for boat trips and beach time. Expect sticky nights, mosquitoes and occasional short squalls; pack light clothing, insect repellent and a thin rain jacket for surprise showers.

Congo Basin Rainforest (central DRC, northern Republic of the Congo, southern Central African Republic)

Persistent humidity and dense canopy define January in the central Congo Basin, where Kinshasa’s outskirts and villages along the Congo River experience warm temperatures and frequent cloudbursts. River levels often remain high from the long wet season, although some stretches close to the equator have a relative lull making river travel easier. For visitors this is a good month for river cruising with many lodges open, but pack lightweight waterproofs and malaria precautions.

Northern Sahelian Fringe (northern Cameroon, Chad, northern Central African Republic)

Arid, dusty and cool mornings characterise January across the Sahelian fringe: N’Djamena and northern Cameroonian towns see early-season harmattan haze, low humidity and daytime highs often in the high 20s-low 30s°C. Roads are generally passable and this is one of the most comfortable months to travel for city and desert-edge itineraries. Carry sun protection and layers - nights can be noticeably cooler.

Great Lakes & Albertine Rift Highlands (Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRC - Goma, Bukavu, Virunga, and surrounding highlands)

Cool, crisp mornings are typical across the highlands in January: Kigali and Bujumbura see daytime temperatures around 20-25°C and nights that can be surprisingly cool, especially on higher slopes. This is a drier month following the short rains, excellent for volcano treks in the Virunga and for gorilla trekking in the region, when trails are firmer and visibility good. Pack a warm layer for evenings and early starts on mountain treks.

Cameroon Highlands & Mount Cameroon (Bamenda Plateau, Mount Cameroon, western highlands)

Clear, cool mornings and pleasant daytime warmth characterise January across the Cameroon highlands; Bamenda and Buea are generally drier than the coastal plain and offer comfortable hiking conditions. Mount Cameroon’s lower slopes are accessible for climbs, and the dry trails make multi-day ascents more feasible. Pack warming layers for nights - temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations.
