Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Gulf of Guinea Coast & São Tomé (coastal Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, western DRC, São Tomé & Príncipe)

The long rains are establishing in April across coastal Gabon and the Congolese littoral, with persistent cloud, daily downpours and temperatures still in the high 20s°C. Libreville, Douala and the western DRC coasts see heavy thunderstorms that can disrupt flights and make beaches less pleasant. For travelers that means flexible itineraries: river and rainforest boat trips may be slower, but lodges are quieter and prices often lower.

Congo Basin Rainforest (central DRC, northern Republic of the Congo, southern Central African Republic)

The wettest pulse usually arrives in April - days of heavy rain are common, and many secondary roads in the basin become impassable. Towns like Mbandaka and river ports see very high water levels that enable deeper river navigation but hamper shoreline access. This is low season for many lodges; if you go, choose operators experienced with rainy operations and bring strong waterproof protection and insect repellent.

Northern Sahelian Fringe (northern Cameroon, Chad, northern Central African Republic)

By April temperatures often peak and the landscape begins to brown; occasional storms start to develop later in the month though widespread rainfall is not yet reliable in the Sahel fringe. Nights are short and warm, and the increased heat makes overland travel slower. If planning visits to cultural festivals or remote archaeological sites, prepare for intense sun and limited shade.

Great Lakes & Albertine Rift Highlands (Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRC - Goma, Bukavu, Virunga, and surrounding highlands)

April is often one of the wettest months, with sustained rains and saturated soil across the Albertine Rift; Nyungwe’s canopy and the slopes around Volcanoes NP are verdant but challenging to explore on foot. Road travel can be slower and some secondary routes become impassable - expect delays moving between Goma, Bukavu and Kigali. Bring waterproof boots and accept slower walking paces on treks.

Cameroon Highlands & Mount Cameroon (Bamenda Plateau, Mount Cameroon, western highlands)

April is part of the wetter phase - persistent afternoon rains and heavy fog on higher slopes are common on the Bamenda plateau and around Mount Cameroon. Visibility for summit attempts is often poor and trails turn slippery; many guide teams shorten itineraries or recommend postponing climbs. Travellers should be prepared for wet conditions and limited mountain vistas, though lower-elevation forest walks remain richly green.
