Caracol
Archaeological Site Ancient Maya city with monumental pyramids
Caracol presents one of Belize’s largest Maya complexes; visitors come for the Caana pyramid, jungle trails, carved stelae and guided archaeology tours that reveal Classic-period urban planning.
Caracol is a major Classic Maya archaeological site in the Cayo District of western Belize, set in the Chiquibul Forest. The site includes large pyramids, plazas, carved stelae and causeways and was a significant regional political centre in the Classic period.
The most prominent feature is the large pyramid commonly called Caana or the Sky Palace, which rises to roughly 43 metres and provides a summit platform with wide views across the forest canopy. The site also contains multiple plazas, carved stelae, ballcourts and raised sacbe causeways linking architectural groups, giving a sense of a large, organised urban centre.
Caracol was a flourishing Maya city during the Classic period; epigraphic and archaeological evidence shows it played a major role in regional politics and economy between about AD 300 and AD 900. Systematic archaeological work has recorded architecture, ceramics and inscriptions and ongoing conservation has stabilised several major structures.
Caracol sits deep in western Belize’s Chiquibul Forest Reserve in the Cayo District, reached by unpaved roads from the regional towns. The site is relatively remote and visits are commonly made as part of organised trips from San Ignacio or other local bases.
- Caana height: About 43 metres tall and built of core-and-veneer masonry, the principal pyramid is one of the tallest ancient structures in Belize.
- Access and logistics: The site is in dense forest and most access is by unpaved roads or guided tours; plan for a long, bumpy drive or chartered transport from San Ignacio.
What to See #
- Caana (Sky Palace): A multi-level masonry pyramid with a summit platform that reaches roughly 43 metres in height and dominates the site skyline.
- Plazas and stelae: Several large plazas and groups of stelae and altars form the civic and ceremonial core, many carved with hieroglyphic inscriptions and dates from the Classic period.
- Ballcourts and causeways: At least two formal ballcourts and raised causeways connect major groups of structures across the site.
How to Get to Caracol #
Caracol lies about 40-50 km south-southwest of San Ignacio (via the Maya Road and forest tracks). The most common access is a guided shuttle or 4x4 tour leaving San Ignacio early in the morning (drive time 1.5-2.5 hours depending on road conditions). Independent drivers should check with local tour operators about the final unpaved section; some operators run daily lodging-country shuttles from San Ignacio and Belmopan.
Tips for Visiting Caracol #
- Arrive on the earliest guided shuttle from San Ignacio (departures around 7:00-7:30am) to avoid midday heat and see the site with far fewer people.
- Hire a licensed guide at the visitor centre - they'll read the glyphs, point out carved stairways and the summit shrine of Caana (the "Sky Place").
- Bring mosquito repellent and sun protection; trails are dusty and exposed. Pack binoculars for wildlife along the approach.
- If visiting after heavy rain, check road conditions: the last stretch is on unpaved forest roads that can be slow or impassable.
Best Time to Visit Caracol #
Go in the dry months for the safest roads and the clearest views from Caana; avoid heavy-rain months if road conditions are a concern.
