About California Zephyr

The California Zephyr is Amtrak’s flagship route between the Midwest and Northern California, following rail corridors built to conquer the Rocky Mountains and later to push across the interior basins toward the Pacific.

East of Denver, the line climbs quickly toward the Continental Divide, then threads through narrow canyons and river valleys in Colorado. West of Salt Lake City, the scenery opens into the Great Basin before the route rises again into the Sierra Nevada, where forests and granite slopes replace desert flats.

The Route & Highlights

  • Chicago - Depart from the shore of Lake Michigan, rolling past industrial yards and Midwestern suburbs before the landscape opens into farmland.
  • Omaha - The train follows the Missouri River corridor for stretches; keep watch for big-sky sunsets across the plains.
  • Denver - A major stop before the climb. After departure, the views improve quickly as the train heads into the Front Range.
  • Glenwood Springs - One of the signature daylight sections, running beside the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon; try for a window when the river is closest to the tracks.
  • Grand Junction - The river valleys widen and red-rock country begins to dominate as you cross western Colorado.
  • Salt Lake City - Usually reached around the second evening, with glimpses of the Wasatch Range and the urban edge of the Great Salt Lake basin.
  • Reno - Desert night often gives way to morning light in Nevada, depending on the timetable and season.
  • Sacramento - Arrival into California brings river lowlands and tree-lined approaches before the final leg toward the Bay.
  • Emeryville - The rail journey ends on the eastern side of the Bay. Many travellers continue by connecting bus to San Francisco.
When to Go

Best Time to Ride

For the best chance of long, clear views in the Rocky Mountains and along the Colorado River, aim for Apr-Oct, when daylight is longer and you are more likely to see the key canyon sections in sunlight.

Winter trips can be memorable for snow in the Sierra Nevada, but short days mean more scenery passes in darkness, and severe weather can affect punctuality. Amtrak timetables can shift seasonally, so check the current schedule if you are timing a particular scenic section.

Plan Your Journey

Getting There

Start from Chicago Union Station, which is straightforward to reach from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport via city transit and taxis, and is also a hub for other Amtrak routes. If you are coming from elsewhere in the USA, it can be practical to position into Chicago the day before.

The train terminates at Emeryville station, with onward connections into the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Francisco via Amtrak connecting buses. Stopovers are possible in practice, but you typically need to book separate tickets for each segment if you plan to break the trip.

Tickets, Classes & Booking

Book through Amtrak, choosing between Coach and sleeping accommodation (roomettes and bedrooms). Sleepers cost more but add privacy and usually include meals, which can change what the total trip cost feels like compared with buying food separately.

For popular travel dates and especially for sleepers, booking well ahead is sensible. Reservations are required for this long-distance service, and availability can sell out. Rail passes may cover the base fare but you still need the appropriate reservations, and sleepers typically require an additional charge.
