Lake Tanganyika coast (Bujumbura, Rumonge, Nyanza-Lac)

From March the lake coast moves into the main rains: intense downpours and thunderstorms become frequent, especially in April. Bujumbura’s rivers and drains back up during heavy events, causing short-lived urban flooding; beaches are quieter and some lodges close for maintenance. If you’re here for birding or fishing the swollen rivers bring good activity, but expect disrupted road journeys and pack waterproof gear and sturdy footwear.

Central Highlands (Gitega, Ngozi, Muramvya)

March moves the central highlands firmly into the long rainy season with frequent heavy showers and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, especially in April. Rural roads become softer and landslide risk increases on the steeper slopes around Muramvya, so public transport can be slower and some secondary routes may be impassable. The countryside is deeply green and waterfalls are at their best - great for photography but wear good boots and expect delays.

Northern lakes & wetlands (Kirundo, Lake Rweru area)

March ushers in the long rains and the northern wetlands swell rapidly, making lakes and marshes dramatic but cutting some tracks off to low-clearance vehicles. Ruvubu tributaries widen and some remote access points into wetland reserves are only reachable on foot or with sturdy 4x4s. Travellers focused on wildlife should plan flexible itineraries and waterproof gear, as viewing is best between showers.

Eastern Ruvubu valley & Cankuzo (Ruvubu National Park area)

March pushes the Ruvubu area into the long rainy season, and rivers rise rapidly; park tracks may become challenging and some remote camps less accessible. Wildlife viewing remains good as animals adjust movements to new water sources, but expect interruptions to guided drives during heavy downpours. A flexible itinerary and waterproof gear are vital - nights may be cooler and mosquitos more active close to the waterways.

Southern highlands & Bururi plateau (Bururi, Mount Heha area)

March takes the southern highlands into the heart of the long rains; persistent drizzle, drenching storms and low cloud are common across Bururi plateau. Mountain trails can be treacherous and some remote guesthouses limit access until tracks dry; flowering and fruiting in the forest draw keen birders despite the inconvenience. Prepare for delays and bring warm layers as cloud cover cools daytime temperatures compared with the lowlands.
