Lake Tanganyika coast (Bujumbura, Rumonge, Nyanza-Lac)

June brings noticeably dryer, more comfortable weather along the lakeshore and clear mornings with refreshing breezes off Tanganyika. Afternoons are warm but less oppressive, ideal for boat trips to nearby islands and for walking the lakeside market in Bujumbura. Nights are more pleasant; light layers suffice, and there are far fewer mosquitoes than in the rainy months, so it’s a favorable time for outdoor dining and water activities.

Central Highlands (Gitega, Ngozi, Muramvya)

June brings a welcome dry spell and noticeably cooler temperatures, particularly at dawn and dusk on the plateau where mornings can feel crisp. This is one of the best months for hiking the ridgelines, visiting traditional kingdoms sites, and driving between towns without the mud of the wet season. Daytime is comfortable in shirts, but carry a warm layer for early starts or evening events in open-air venues.

Northern lakes & wetlands (Kirundo, Lake Rweru area)

June marks the start of the dry season: lake edges recede, roads firm up, and mornings become clear and pleasantly cool. This is arguably the most reliable time to explore remote wetland hides and community-run reserves near Kirundo without repeated washouts. Bring light layers for early starts, and sunscreen for increasingly hot afternoons if you move to lower-lying areas.

Eastern Ruvubu valley & Cankuzo (Ruvubu National Park area)

June opens the dry, cool period with lower humidity and much-improved access to remote park areas; mornings are crisp and perfect for early drives. This is one of the best windows for multi-day treks and reliable game-viewing as animals gather at permanent water sources. Bring warm layers for dawn and dusk and plan to travel between towns earlier in the day when roads are at their driest.

Southern highlands & Bururi plateau (Bururi, Mount Heha area)

June brings clear, cool mornings and comfortable hiking conditions on the Bururi plateau; visibility from lookout points is at its best and trails are firm. This is prime time for trekking, forest walks and exploring crater lakes with fewer insects than in the wet season. Pack a warmer mid-layer for early starts and evenings, and expect reliable rural transport schedules.
