Lake Tanganyika coast (Bujumbura, Rumonge, Nyanza-Lac)

April is often the wettest month on the Tanganyika shore with long, heavy showers and warm, humid interludes; visibility on the lake can drop during storms. Rumonge’s rivers swell and mud makes the smaller roads awkward for low-clearance vehicles; some rural guesthouses are harder to reach. The upside for travelers is lush vegetation and fewer crowds at lakeside swimming spots, but plan more travel time and keep the schedule flexible.

Central Highlands (Gitega, Ngozi, Muramvya)

April is often the wettest month high on the plateau: persistent rain, low cloud, and very muddy trails are common around Gitega and Ngozi. Agricultural activity surges and the hill farmers are busiest, which makes market visits interesting but field walks more arduous. Expect cooler daytime temperatures under cloud cover, and pack waterproof trousers and shoes; guided cultural excursions often adjust itineraries to dry windows.

Northern lakes & wetlands (Kirundo, Lake Rweru area)

April is typically wettest in the north, with prolonged rains filling the seasonal pans around Kirundo and sometimes causing local flooding on low-lying roads. Boat-based or canoe visits to bigger wetlands become seasonally viable in some areas, transforming the look of the countryside and concentrating birds. Travel can be slow; pack waterproofs and be prepared for cancelled or delayed local rides during heavy storms.

Eastern Ruvubu valley & Cankuzo (Ruvubu National Park area)

April is often wettest in the eastern valley; thick mud can limit off-road driving and river crossings become more hazardous, making some park circuits temporarily closed. The landscape is at its greenest and river cascades are dramatic, rewarding photographers willing to tolerate damp conditions. Travel plans commonly need contingency days and sturdy, quick-drying clothing is indispensable for this month.

Southern highlands & Bururi plateau (Bururi, Mount Heha area)

April is often the wettest month on the high plateau: heavy rain, dense mist and saturated trails dominate - but the flora and waterfalls are at their most dramatic. Access to some lookouts and rural homestays may be restricted by mud and landslips on steep lanes, so guided walks are preferred for safety. Waterproofs, gaiters and a patient attitude are essential if you want to experience the forest in its full flush.
