Burundi in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Lake Tanganyika coast (Bujumbura, Rumonge, Nyanza-Lac)

April is often the wettest month on the Tanganyika shore with long, heavy showers and warm, humid interludes; visibility on the lake can drop during storms. Rumonge’s rivers swell and mud makes the smaller roads awkward for low-clearance vehicles; some rural guesthouses are harder to reach. The upside for travelers is lush vegetation and fewer crowds at lakeside swimming spots, but plan more travel time and keep the schedule flexible.

Central Highlands (Gitega, Ngozi, Muramvya)

April is often the wettest month high on the plateau: persistent rain, low cloud, and very muddy trails are common around Gitega and Ngozi. Agricultural activity surges and the hill farmers are busiest, which makes market visits interesting but field walks more arduous. April is often the wettest month on the high plateau: heavy rain, dense mist and saturated trails dominate - but the flora and waterfalls are at their most dramatic.
