Bulgaria in April: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Black Sea Coast (Varna, Burgas, Sozopol, Golden Sands)

Late spring in April brings more consistent warmth and stronger sun; daytime highs often reach the mid-teens to low twenties and the first bathers appear on sunnier shores. The Rose Festival inland doesn’t affect beach life directly, but day trips from Burgas to Kazanlak are comfortable now. Expect weekends to become busier as Bulgarians begin short seaside breaks - bring sunglasses and light layers for cool evenings.

Danubian Plain & Northern Bulgaria (Ruse, Silistra, Vidin)

April warms noticeably with daytime highs often in the mid-teens, and the plain turns green: wildflowers and early agricultural activity make landscape drives pleasant. Occasional heavy showers and rapidly swollen tributaries can disrupt low-lying roads, so check conditions before exploring small villages. Easter (Orthodox schedule varies) is active in towns with local markets and church services worth experiencing.

Sofia Basin & Western Bulgaria (Sofia, Vitosha, Pernik)

April often warms into the mid-teens with cherry trees and tulips brightening Sofia’s parks; mountain snow retreats but higher hikes can still have patches of ice.
