Black Sea Coast (Varna, Burgas, Sozopol, Golden Sands)

February still leans cool and damp, with spring just a tease and seawater too cold for most swimmers. Foggy mornings and windy afternoons can close smaller boat tours, but museums in Varna and Burgas and the salt pans near Pomorie stay accessible. Hotel rates remain low and this is the time to find off-season deals, though sturdy shoes and a windproof jacket are essential.

Danubian Plain & Northern Bulgaria (Ruse, Silistra, Vidin)

February often remains cold with temperatures hovering around 0-6°C, but sunny spells occasionally break up the grey and reveal early crocus on roadside verges. Ice on secondary roads can make rural driving cautious; this is a slow month for sightseeing but museums in Ruse or the small fortress towns are open and comfortably uncrowded. Pack warm gloves and a hat for windy walks along the Danube.

Sofia Basin & Western Bulgaria (Sofia, Vitosha, Pernik)

February remains wintery with reliable conditions on nearby slopes - Borovets and Vitosha offer skiable runs and weekend crowds from Sofia. Temperatures stay around freezing in the city and colder up on the mountains; sunny mid-days can be deceptive, so bring sunglasses and a warm mid-layer. Off-peak hotel rates in the city make urban sightseeing attractive between ski days.

Thracian Plain & Southern Bulgaria (Plovdiv, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora)

February keeps that late-winter feel with sharp sunny days occasionally breaking the grey; daytime highs commonly reach the single digits to low teens. The Rose Valley rests in its dormant phase - fields are bare but the air is crisp, and pre-season prices make it convenient for quiet visits to Kazanlak’s museums. Waterproof shoes and a warm coat make countryside drives comfortable.

Balkan Mountains & Central Ridges (Stara Planina, Shipka Pass, Central Balkan National Park)

February continues a full winter regime with deep snow at higher elevations and cold, clear days interspersed with heavy storms. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are possible on maintained trails if you have the right equipment; lower villages such as Tryavna are picturesque under snow. Road conditions over passes may be difficult - winter tires and local advice are mandatory.

Rila, Pirin & Rhodope Mountains (Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo, Rila Monastery)

February sustains strong winter conditions with prime skiing in Bansko and Borovets; temperatures at resort elevation commonly sit well below freezing. Snowmaking is used on lower slopes to ensure runs stay open, and après-ski is lively in resort towns. If you dislike crowds, weekdays outside major holiday weeks are quieter but still wintry and cold.
