Black Sea Coast (Varna, Burgas, Sozopol, Golden Sands)
May is when the coast wakes up properly: sea temperatures inch into the low teens and beach towns reopen for the season. Crowds remain modest early in the month, making May ideal for cycling along the seafront in Varna or exploring archaeological sites without the full-summer crush. Rain showers are still possible, so have a light rain jacket and plan for both sun and sudden cloud.
Danubian Plain & Northern Bulgaria (Ruse, Silistra, Vidin)
By May the Danubian Plain is mild and floral, with comfortable high-teens to low-twenties temperatures and long daylight hours. Birdlife around wetland reserves like the Srebarna Nature Reserve is vivid as migration winds down; boat safaris and guided walks are very rewarding. This is an excellent month for rural accommodations, farm-to-table food, and cycling without the summer heat.
Sofia Basin & Western Bulgaria (Sofia, Vitosha, Pernik)
By May the basin feels like full spring - daytime temperatures in the high teens to low twenties and long, pleasant evenings in Sofia’s outdoor restaurants. Mountain trails become more accessible and wildflowers blanket meadows on the approach to Rila and Vitosha; late snow in shaded gullies is still possible so gaiters or sturdy footwear can help. This is an excellent month for city festivals and day hikes outside the city.
Thracian Plain & Southern Bulgaria (Plovdiv, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora)
May is warm and fragrant across the Thracian lowlands, with highs commonly in the low to mid-20s; this is peak time for the Rose Festival around Kazanlak when fields and culture events are in full swing. Sightseeing and winery tours are at their best - bring sun protection for midday and a light jacket for cooler evenings. Day trips to the Valley of the Thracian Kings are ideal now.
Balkan Mountains & Central Ridges (Stara Planina, Shipka Pass, Central Balkan National Park)
May is a triumphant month in the central ranges: meadows fill with flowers and waterfalls swell from melting snow, enhancing classic routes in Central Balkan National Park. Mountain huts reopen and trail services improve, making multi-day treks more viable. Nights remain cool; bring warm sleeping layers and plan for lingering snow on shaded ridges.
Rila, Pirin & Rhodope Mountains (Bansko, Borovets, Pamporovo, Rila Monastery)
May brings flourishing meadows and thundery spring afternoons at mid-elevations; Rhodope hills become a green retreat while Rila and Pirin ridges still hold patches of snow. Hiking becomes increasingly attractive, with waterfalls in full flow near Sapareva Banya and the Seven Rila Lakes area often reachable by foot. Pack a warm layer and good footwear for muddy trails.
