Brunei-Muara & Bandar Seri Begawan (North coast and capital)

After weeks of heavier rains the city usually remains steamy but navigable in January; Bandar Seri Begawan’s waterfront and Kampong Ayer look lush while roads can puddle after long downpours. Flooding is possible in low-lying lanes near the Brunei River, so bring waterproof shoes and a light rain jacket. Sightseeing is fine between showers - the Sultan’s Palace and Royal Regalia Museum are indoor options when thunderstorms roll through.

Belait District (Kuala Belait, Seria and the west coast)

Heavy overnight rains in January make river levels rise near Kuala Belait and Seria; mornings are muggy and daytime temperatures stay high. Oil-industry infrastructure is used to wet weather but some coastal tracks can flood, so bring waterproof boots for exploring mangrove edges. If you’re timing a wildlife or mangrove trip, mornings between storms are often the calmest and clearest for birdwatching.

Tutong District and Central Coast

January’s frequent showers leave the Tutong coastline and river valleys vivid and swollen; Tutong town can experience puddled streets and higher river crossings after sustained rain. Morning excursions to the Tutong River are pleasant between storms, but bring repellant for mosquitoes when the sun comes out. Roads are passable for most vehicles, though secondary coastal tracks may need caution.

Temburong District & Ulu Temburong (eastern exclave, rainforest and canopy)

January is usually one of the wettest months in Temburong, making jungle trails and river trips very wet and rivers high - spectacular for swollen waterfalls but slippery underfoot. Ulu Temburong’s canopy walk may close during storms so check with the park office; guided river trips are dramatic when safe. Bring a strong rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, and expect heavily humid, insect-rich conditions.

Interior Highlands and Bukit Pagon area (upland rainforest and higher elevations)

January keeps the uplands wet and cloudy, with cooler temperatures than the coast and persistent drizzle at higher elevations. Bukit Pagon’s approaches are soggy and steeper trails become slippery, so experienced hikers bring solid boots and layered clothing. Visibility can fall into mist during storms, making summit views rare but the cloud forest vegetation vivid and mossy.
