Brunei-Muara & Bandar Seri Begawan (North coast and capital)
Humidity rises again in August even if the rains haven’t returned to full strength; cloudy mornings and unexpected tropical showers punctuate otherwise warm days. Boat trips across Brunei Bay remain possible but may be interrupted by afternoon squalls. This month marks the start of the regional fire season; travellers with respiratory sensitivities should monitor haze levels and consider masks if smoke occurs.
Belait District (Kuala Belait, Seria and the west coast)
August can bring a perceptible increase in haze on bad fire years, reducing coastal visibility and affecting outdoor comfort; otherwise the weather is warm with intermittent showers. Offshore fishing and mangrove tours run but captains may avoid particularly smoky mornings. If air quality dips because of regional fires, indoor options in Kuala Belait and Seria are sensible fallback plans.
Tutong District and Central Coast
August can feel muggy and overcast, with abrupt thunderstorms possible in the afternoons; humidity is high but many days are still suitable for outdoor activities if scheduled early. River levels may fluctuate with passing systems, so water-based tours can be rewarding but sometimes scaled back. Consider flexible travel plans during this month.
Temburong District & Ulu Temburong (eastern exclave, rainforest and canopy)
August can be humid with a greater chance of haze in bad fire years, but the forest itself often has dry patches that make trail travel easier than during monsoon months. Diurnal thunderstorms still occur and guides will adapt routes accordingly. If regional haze reduces visibility, opt for shorter jungle walks rather than long boat trips for better safety.
Interior Highlands and Bukit Pagon area (upland rainforest and higher elevations)
August occasionally suffers reduced visibility from regional haze in bad years, but the highlands still generally enjoy decent trekking conditions and cool air. Afternoon showers are possible but often short-lived; early starts maximize clear-sky opportunities. Insect activity is lower at higher elevations, which makes nocturnal wildlife listening more pleasant than in the lowlands.
