Bely Gorod

Bely Gorod is a historic district of central Moscow whose name means “White City,” originally referring to a defensive white-stone wall that encircled the medieval city. Today the term denotes the area corresponding to that former ring of fortifications and the streets that replaced them.

The site is identified in the modern city by a band of boulevards and streets that mark the former wall line; it contains parks, theatres and urban blocks that form part of Moscow’s central urban fabric. The area is heavily urbanised and integrated into the city’s core.

Historically the white-stone fortifications were built in the late medieval period as part of Moscow’s defensive works and were later demolished and replaced by boulevards and streets as the city modernised. The transformation from fortification to urban boulevard is a key aspect of its history.
