Baray
Archaeological Site Large ancient reservoir associated with Angkor's water system
The Baray near Angkor is a vast ancient reservoir from the Khmer empire; visitors combine temple circuits with cycling along embankments to see reflections, irrigation works and surrounding rice paddies.
A baray is a large artificial reservoir constructed by the Angkorian Khmer Empire in the Angkor region and elsewhere in Cambodia to store water for irrigation and possibly for symbolic and ritual purposes. These earth-and-stone reservoirs are among the most extensive hydraulic works of the Khmer period.
Major examples include the West Baray and East Baray, each extending for multiple kilometres and forming broad mirror-like surfaces in the landscape that are visible from roads and high ground. The barays are integrated with canals, moats and temple sites and remain prominent landscape features today.
Barays were constructed during the Angkor period, roughly between the 9th and 13th centuries, as part of a planned water-management network that supported rice agriculture and the empire’s growing population. Their construction involved large-scale earthworks and long-term maintenance.
The barays are found in and around Siem Reap province, adjacent to the Angkor archaeological zone; they are visible from local roads and from viewpoints near Angkor’s temple complexes.
- Scale: Several barays around Angkor measure multiple kilometres across; the West Baray and East Baray are among the largest artificial reservoirs built by the Angkorian Khmer state.
What to See #
- West Baray: West Baray - a large rectangular reservoir located southwest of Angkor Thom, historically used for water storage and irrigation and visible as an extensive calm water surface.
- East Baray: East Baray - a large baray to the east of Angkor's central complexes, constructed as part of Khmer water-management systems and visible in satellite imagery as a broad elongated reservoir.
Tips for Visiting Baray #
- Visit the baray at sunrise or sunset for the best light and still-water reflections - photographers get the clearest views then and the area is noticeably quieter than midday.
- Reach the baray from Siem Reap by tuk‑tuk or bicycle and follow the embankments rather than cutting across fields; riding the perimeter gives multiple vantage points that many day‑visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Baray #
Visit in the cool dry months (Nov-Feb) for the most comfortable weather and best conditions for exploring the Baray and nearby Angkor area.
