Ban Jelačić Square is Zagreb’s central city square named for 19th-century Croatian governor Josip Jelačić and serves as the historic and commercial heart of the Croatian capital. It is the city’s principal public space and transportation hub.

The square functions as a meeting point and is surrounded by shops, cafes, and major streets that radiate through the city; tram lines converge here making it a primary transit interchange. The equestrian statue of Ban Jelačić stands at its centre and is an iconic local landmark.

The square developed as Zagreb grew in the 18th and 19th centuries and has been the site of public gatherings, markets and civic events. The central statue was removed during the mid-20th century and returned in 1990 as part of political and cultural changes in Croatia.

The square sits in the lower town of Zagreb and forms the junction between the city’s upper historic core and the newer commercial districts, within walking distance of many central city landmarks.
