Ba Bể Lake is a large natural freshwater lake in northeastern Vietnam, situated within a karst basin and protected as part of Ba Bể National Park. It is the country’s largest natural lake and is noted for its combination of open water, forested hills and limestone cliffs.
The lake consists of three main connected basins - Pé Lầm, Pé Lù and Pé Lèng - separated by peninsulas and dotted with small islands and rivers. Boat trips between lakeside villages are the primary way to explore the water, caves and rivers that thread the park.
The area was designated a national park to conserve its biodiversity and traditional Tay and Dao ethnic minority villages; the park contains mixed tropical forest, limestone formations and several notable caves. The lake and park support ecotourism, birdwatching and village visits.
Ba Bể sits in Bắc Kạn Province in northeastern Vietnam, roughly several hours’ drive north of Hanoi in a remote karst landscape.
