Tam Dao National Park
Park Mountainous park north of Hanoi with cloud forests
Mountain park north of Hanoi, Tam Đảo is a colonial-era hill station with cool air, forest trails, viewpoints and waterfalls; visitors come for hiking, birdwatching and weekend escapes from the capital.
Tam Dao National Park is a mountainous protected area in northern Vietnam, covering peaks and highland forest around the Tam Dao massif. It was established to protect the area’s forest and biodiversity in the late 20th century.
The park features montane and cloud forest at higher elevations, with a cluster of peaks and a small mountain town that serves as a base for walks. Trails lead to ridgelines, viewpoints and forested valleys.
Vietnamese authorities created the protected area to conserve remaining natural forest and associated species, and to regulate land use around the highland town. The park has been managed for both protection and low-impact tourism.
Tam Dao sits in northern Vietnam’s uplands, roughly northwest of Hanoi in the region of Vinh Phuc and nearby provinces. The terrain is steep and forested compared with surrounding agricultural lowlands.
- Montane forest and biodiversity: Higher-elevation slopes produce cloud and montane forest conditions, making the park important for biodiversity and cooler temperatures than surrounding lowlands.
- Proximity to Hanoi: Sits within reasonable driving distance northwest of Hanoi, making it a common weekend destination from the capital.
