Ba Bể National Park is a protected area in northern Vietnam centred on Ba Bể Lake, one of the country’s largest natural freshwater lakes. The park protects karst mountains, evergreen forest and freshwater ecosystems.

Visitors commonly take boat trips across the lake to access shoreline villages, caves and viewpoints among limestone cliffs; the park is valued for its lake scenery, caves and biodiversity. Notable on-site features include caves that open directly onto the lake and forested karst outcrops.

The natural basin that forms the lake and surrounding karst was shaped by geological and erosional processes, and the area later became a formal protected area to conserve landscape and biodiversity. The park supports a number of ethnic minority communities who live in villages around the lake.

Ba Bể National Park is in northern Vietnam in Bắc Kạn Province, in a mountainous inland area of the country. The park lies inland from the Red River Delta region and is approached by regional roads and river routes.

  • Boat access: Boat trips across the lake are the primary way to access scenic points and caves within the park.
  • Landscape: The park protects a karst landscape of forested limestone ridges and freshwater wetlands centered on the lake.

What to See #

  • Ba Bể Lake: The main freshwater body that gives the park its name; surrounded by limestone cliffs and evergreen forest and used for boat trips across the lake.
  • Puông Cave: A limestone cave on the lake shore accessible by boat; contains stalactites and formed within the local karst geology.
