How to Get to 'Ayy#
Al-‘Ayy in the Al-Karak area is best reached by road from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) or from Amman by coach. There is no rail service; buses and intercity coaches plus local taxis are the standard public transport options.
Queen Alia International Airport (AMM): The main international airport for Jordan and the usual arrival point for visitors to Al-‘Ayy (Karak area). From AMM the drive to Al-‘Ayy is around 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic; taxis and private transfers commonly cost JOD 25-45.
King Hussein International (AQJ): If travelling from Aqaba, AQJ is an alternative but it adds inland driving time; most visitors to Karak come via Amman by road or coach.
Train: Jordan currently lacks intercity passenger rail services suitable for travel to Karak/Al-‘Ayy.
Bus / Coach: Intercity coaches (JETT and local operators) run from Amman to Karak; the ride takes about 1-1.5 hours from Amman depending on departure point. From Karak town you can use local taxis or service vehicles to reach Al-‘Ayy; coach fares are inexpensive (single-digit JOD).
How to Get Around 'Ayy#
Travel to Al-‘Ayy is straightforward by road from Amman (AMM) or the capital city - use an intercity coach to Karak plus a local taxi for the final leg for an economical option, or take a private transfer for speed and convenience.
- Intercity Coach (JETT / Local) (JOD 2-6) - Coaches run regularly from Amman to Karak and are a cost-effective option with travel times around 1-1.5 hours. From Karak town you will need a local taxi or minibus to reach Al-‘Ayy. Coaches are comfortable and run fixed schedules.
- Taxi / Private Transfer (JOD 25-45) - A private taxi or transfer from Amman or AMM is faster and more convenient, particularly with luggage. Expect door-to-door travel times of about 1.5-2.5 hours from AMM; agree a price in advance or use a licensed service.
- Local Service Vehicles (JOD 0.5-2) - Shared taxis and small service vans operate between Karak and nearby villages including Al-‘Ayy; they are cheap and useful for the last-mile but operate on informal schedules. Prepare for less comfort and to wait for departures.
- Rental Car (JOD 20-45/day) - Renting a car gives you maximum flexibility for exploring Karak’s ruins and surrounding villages; roads are generally good but some rural lanes can be narrow. Parking is usually straightforward in small towns.
- Taxi within Karak (JOD 1-8) - Local taxis can take you from Karak bus/coach stations to Al-‘Ayy and nearby sites; fares are modest but confirm price before travel. Taxis are ideal for short, direct hops where public vans are infrequent.
- Walking - Village centres around Al-‘Ayy are compact and walkable for short distances; pedestrian facilities may be basic and roads can be steep. Walking is best for exploring local streets and historic sites nearby.
