Ein Gedi is an oasis, archaeological complex and nature reserve on the western shore of the Dead Sea in Israel, centered on a series of springs and streams. The area is known for freshwater pools, waterfalls and a rich assemblage of desert flora and fauna.

Visitors follow marked trails to springs and small waterfalls, visit archaeological remains including ancient settlement and religious sites, and observe wildlife such as ibex and birds that use the oasis. The reserve combines natural attractions with cultural remains in a stark Dead Sea landscape.

The oasis lies on the western Dead Sea escarpment and is approached from the coastal road; it sits south of Jerusalem and near other Dead Sea sites such as Masada and Qumran.

• Springs and waterfalls: The reserve contains perennial springs that sustain waterfalls and pools; water flow is strongest after winter rains but many springs run year-round.
• Visiting tips: Popular hiking trails are well marked but can be hot and exposed in summer; early morning visits are recommended for cooler conditions and wildlife viewing.

What to See#

• Nahal David: Nahal David stream and trail system leading to freshwater pools and a seasonal waterfall within the reserve.
• Archaeological sites: Archaeological remains including ancient settlement terraces, a synagogue and monastic ruins in and around the oasis.

Ein Gedi Nature Reserve is on the western shore of the Dead Sea and is reached via Highway 90, which runs along the Dead Sea’s western bank. Drive south on Highway 90 from Jerusalem or north from the southern Dead Sea area to the Ein Gedi parking and visitor area; once parked the main trails and springs are accessed by short marked walks (minutes to an hour depending on which trail you choose). There are also occasional public buses that serve the Dead Sea road and stop near Ein Gedi.

• Enter Ein Gedi via the official nature reserve parking area off Route 90 to access the David and Shulamit trails; the reserve entrance is the correct start point for the popular waterfall hikes.
• Start early in the day (or late afternoon) to enjoy cooler temperatures and quieter trails; the reserve's main cascades are busiest mid-morning, while the lower Nahal David section tends to be less crowded and rewarding for swimming in designated pools.
• Combine a hike in Ein Gedi with a short drive to nearby Dead Sea viewpoints-many visitors miss the botanical collection and oasis contrasts when they only stop briefly at the waterfall trails.
