How to Get to Tafilah

Tafilah is most practically reached by road from Amman (Queen Alia International). Regular minibuses and coaches run from Amman; a rental car or taxi gives the most direct access to the governorate's dispersed sites.

By Air

Queen Alia International Airport (AMM): Jordan’s main international gateway in Amman. From AMM the simplest way to reach Tafilah is by taxi or rental car (drive time roughly 2-3 hours depending on traffic and exact route). Shared/minibus services from Amman can also reach Tafilah; these are cheaper but slower.

King Hussein International Airport (AQJ): Aqaba is much further south; travel from Aqaba to Tafilah is a long drive (several hours) and not the usual arrival point for visitors to Tafilah unless combining a Red Sea trip.

By Train & Bus

Train: Jordan does not currently operate an intercity passenger rail network usable for Tafilah.

Bus: Intercity minibuses (service taxis) and regional buses run from Amman (often from the South Bus Station or Al-Jubaiha/Tabarbour hubs) to Tafilah. Expect a travel time of around 2-3 hours from Amman; fares for minibuses are typically low (a few Jordanian dinars). Buses and shared taxis are the common and practical option for local travel.

How to Get Around Tafilah #

Tafilah’s central area is small and walkable for short errands; streets are compact so walking between shops and cafés is easy. For longer journeys, service minibuses and regional buses link Tafilah with larger cities like Amman and Aqaba, while taxis and hired cars are common for local trips. If you plan day trips around the governorate, renting a car gives the most flexibility; bus schedules can be limited outside peak times.
