About Ascensor da Bica

Operated by Carris, Ascensor da Bica links Rua de São Paulo at the lower end with the upper area around Calçada do Combro, Largo do Calhariz and Rua do Loreto. It is one of Lisbon’s well known hillside lifts, designed to tackle streets that are difficult on foot, especially with luggage or in hot weather.

The line has been in operation almost continuously for about 134 years, making it part of the city’s long running public transport story as well as a small landmark in its own right. The ride is short but memorable, with the carriage climbing between tall buildings and looking straight down the street.

Because it runs through an everyday neighbourhood rather than a sealed off attraction, it is as much about the surrounding streetscape as the transport itself. Expect a mix of locals using it as a practical link and visitors coming for the classic Lisbon funicular experience.

Getting There & Around

How to Get to Ascensor da Bica

The funicular runs between Rua de São Paulo (lower end) and the upper connection at Calçada do Combro, near Largo do Calhariz and Rua do Loreto, so you can approach from either side depending on where you are staying.

As it is part of the Carris network, it is easiest to reach by walking from central Lisbon neighbourhoods and then using the lift to avoid the steep climb. If you are using public transport, aim for stops and routes that bring you close to either Rua de São Paulo or the Largo do Calhariz area, then walk the final few minutes.

Tips for Visiting Ascensor da Bica

  • It is a short ride, but it can save a lot of effort on the hill, especially in summer heat.
  • Try riding in both directions if you want different views, downhill gives a clear look towards the lower streets.
  • At busy times, expect queues for the next car and be ready to board promptly.
  • Wear shoes with good grip, the surrounding streets are steep and can be slippery in wet weather.
