The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos is Lisbon’s historic national opera house, inaugurated in 1793. It has been the city’s principal venue for opera and large-scale musical performance since the late 18th century.

Visitors attend opera and concert performances in the theatre’s traditional auditorium and inspect the building’s neoclassical façade and interior décor. The house mounts seasonal opera and classical-music programmes and is an important venue for Portugal’s performing arts.

The theatre was constructed in the late 18th century to provide Lisbon with a formal opera house after earlier venues were lost in the 1755 earthquake. It has operated continuously as an opera house since its opening and has hosted many of Portugal’s major musical events.
