The National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon is Portugal’s principal museum for pre-19th-century painting, sculpture and decorative arts. It preserves and exhibits the country’s major historical artistic holdings alongside European and global objects collected over centuries.

Established to conserve and interpret Portugal’s artistic heritage, the museum’s collections were formed from royal, ecclesiastical and private holdings and have been organised for public display and research. The institution continues to support conservation and scholarly work on its holdings.
