About Santa Justa Lift

Also called the Carmo Lift, the Santa Justa Lift stands at the end of Rua de Santa Justa in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, right in Lisbon’s historic core. It was created to connect two parts of the city that sit at noticeably different heights: the lower Baixa and the higher area around Largo do Carmo.

As a cultural heritage monument, it is notable as much for its structure as for its function. Even if you do not ride it, it is a distinctive landmark on a walk through the centre, and it is closely tied to the experience of moving around Lisbon’s steep streets.

Because it connects directly into the Baixa street grid at one end and to Largo do Carmo at the other, it also works well as a simple orientation point when exploring the surrounding neighbourhoods on foot.

Getting There & Around

How to Get to Santa Justa Lift

The lift is in central Lisbon, at the end of Rua de Santa Justa in the Baixa area, so it is easy to reach on foot from many city centre sights. If you are using public transport, aim for the Baixa and Rossio area and continue on foot through the grid of central streets.

From the upper side, you can approach from Largo do Carmo and descend to Baixa using the lift, which can save effort if you are exploring the hillier parts of the historic centre.

Tips for Visiting Santa Justa Lift

  • If you mainly want views, consider visiting outside peak times when queues can form in the narrow streets nearby.
  • Use it as a practical connector between Baixa and Largo do Carmo rather than only as an attraction.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, the surrounding streets can be steep and uneven even if you take the lift.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings in busy city centre areas, especially when queuing.
