Yerevan and the Ararat Plain

The first hints of spring in the Ararat Plain arrive slowly in April and May, but May itself is often mild and blossoming, with gardens around Etchmiadzin and Echmiadzin Cathedral showing fresh color. Daytime temperatures are comfortably warm for vineyard tours and city promenades, while evenings remain cool. This is a busy period for domestic travel; book accommodations ahead if you plan weekend winery visits.

Lake Sevan and Gegharkunik Highlands

Spring warmth starts slowly; by May the lakeside is waking up with clear, cool days and evenings that still require a jacket. Wildflowers appear on hill slopes and boat services are increasing in frequency, making it a good shoulder-season for fewer crowds and pleasant weather. Pack versatile clothing for temperature swings and bring binoculars if you’re birdwatching along the reed beds.

Northern Highlands (Lori, Tavush, Dilijan)

December often returns to cold, snowy conditions in the northern highlands and the forests take on a true winter character. Cross-country skiing and cozy stays in mountain guesthouses are appealing, but mountain roads can be slow; allow extra travel time. Pack serious cold-weather gear if planning outdoor activities and confirm that any remote lodgings are open before arrival.

Southern Highlands and Syunik (Vayots Dzor, Tatev, Meghri, Kapan)

May is among the best months here: wildflowers carpet mountain pastures, waterfalls are at their most vigorous from snowmelt, and moderate temperatures make extended hikes comfortable. Rural guesthouses reopen fully and local food markets brim with spring produce. Carry a layered wardrobe, water and insect repellent for lower valleys, and plan to visit early in the day to catch clear views before potential afternoon cloud build-up.
