Yerevan and the Ararat Plain
September brings a welcome easing of heat with clear, sunny days and cool evenings - one of the most agreeable months for touring Yerevan and the surrounding sites. Grape-harvest activity in nearby vineyards makes for lively weekend scenes and quieter city streets as locals take trips; it’s an excellent month for walking the city’s neighborhoods. Pack a light sweater for evenings; daytime shirts and sun protection are still appropriate for daytime sightseeing.
Lake Sevan and Gegharkunik Highlands
August keeps a mild highland summer with long daylight and comfortable days ideal for exploring Sevanavank and nearby trails. Local cuisine - notably fish dishes - is at its best in lakeside restaurants, and the area is lively with Armenian families on holiday. Evenings cool quickly, so bring a sweater for lakeside dining, and beware that sudden storms can raise choppy waves on the lake.
Northern Highlands (Lori, Tavush, Dilijan)
August keeps warm days and cool nights; the dense tree cover in Dilijan’s national park makes for very comfortable summer hiking. This is peak domestic holiday season, so expect more Armenian families on weekends and higher occupancy at popular guesthouses. Pack a good pair of walking shoes and reserve specialty eco-lodges in advance if visiting in August.
Southern Highlands and Syunik (Vayots Dzor, Tatev, Meghri, Kapan)
August continues the warm, dry pattern with long sunny days and cool evenings at altitude; nights in the canyons are comfortable for outdoor dining under clear skies. Seasonal crowds peak on weekends as Armenians escape to mountain guesthouses, so reserve accommodations early. Expect minimal rain but occasional thunderstorms in higher terrain; a light waterproof layer is sensible for prolonged hikes.
