Algeria in March: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Coastal Tell Atlas (Algiers, Oran, Béjaïa)

By early March the first bright, mild days arrive and the citrus trees around Béjaïa start showing blossom scents; daytime highs commonly reach 15-18°C. Rain still falls in spells, so plan flexible outdoor time along the Corniche and in coastal national parks; March is quieter than April for visitors, a good time to see museums without high-season crowds.

Kabylie & Eastern Tell (Tizi Ouzou, Béjaïa, Constantine)

March often announces spring in the lower valleys: daytime warmth moves into the mid-teens, streams swell from snowmelt and mountain paths by villages start to green. Trail conditions can be muddy and slippery; this is a fine moment for short hikes and village visits but be ready for sudden showers and variable footing.

High Plateaus & Steppe (Sétif, Batna, M’Sila)

March usually starts a strong thaw: daytime temperatures rise into the low to mid-teens and the steppe turns dusty-brown as snow melts. The landscape can be muddy and dusty by turns; it’s a good month for off-season sightseeing of Roman ruins and plateau towns but bring layers and be prepared for wind.

Northern Sahara & Oases (Ghardaïa, Timimoun, El Oued, Touggourt)

March warms quickly and daytime temperatures often reach the mid-20s; wildflowers sometimes appear around seasonal pans after winter rains. Sand and dust are still generally settled, so visibility is good for desert drives and photographic trips to Timimoun’s red dunes; carry sun protection and a hat for long exposures to the sun.

Hoggar & Tassili Highlands (Tamanrasset, Djanet, Tassili n’Ajjer)

March sees reliable sunshine and gradually warmer days (often 18-22°C) while nights remain chilly at elevation. Spring is a prime season for multi-day treks across the Tassili plateau: bring layered clothing for large temperature swings and expect dramatic early-morning light on the rock formations.
