December turns damper and cooler, with regular rainy days and daytime temperatures back down to about 12-15°C; occasional gusty storms sweep the coast and the sea looks dark and wind-driven. Algiers’ cafés are warm refuges, and this is the least crowded time for coastal sightseeing - bring warm layers, a raincoat and expect some ferry services to be delayed in rough weather.

December brings unmistakable winter to the higher country: frequent rain at lower levels and snow above 800-1,000 m, with nights regularly dipping below freezing on the ridges. Roads into remote villages may be affected; bring warm clothing, waterproofs and be prepared for shorter daylight when planning mountain excursions.
Sétif, Batna, M’Sila
December returns to cold, with nightly freezes common and periodic snow at higher points; daytime highs are often only 5-10°C. Roads can be slippery after snow and ice, so allow extra travel time, and enjoy warming local stews and indoor museum visits when the weather turns severe.
Ghardaïa, Timimoun, El Oued, Touggourt
December is crisp and mild by day, often 15-20°C, with clear skies and brisk nights dipping toward single digits. Desert roads are reliable and daytime exploration of oases and dunes is comfortable; pack warm sleepwear for camps and a windproof jacket for evening winds that can feel sharp in exposed locations.
Tamanrasset, Djanet, Tassili n’Ajjer
December returns to clear, cool days and cold nights on the highlands: daytime temperatures are around 12-16°C while mountain camps can be well below freezing. Winter trekking is possible with the right equipment; warm down sleeping bags and insulated clothing are non-negotiable for overnight stays above 1,000-1,500 m.
