By May the highlands look transformed-meadows are green and waterfalls are full after spring melt, especially around Theth and near Lake Koman. Trail conditions improve rapidly, though some upper paths remain wet and slippery; insect repellent becomes necessary in lower valleys. This is an excellent time for multi-day treks before summer heat and crowds arrive, and mountain guesthouses begin to reopen in earnest.
Durrës, Lezhë, Shengjin
By May the coast is warming; daytime air feels summery and the sea becomes tolerable for early swimmers, especially on calm days in the southern bays. Beach towns like Durrës and Shengjin start to bustle on weekends with locals, and ferry routes to nearby islands increase their frequency. Pack a light jacket for evenings and expect pricier hotels as restaurants open fully for the season.
Tirana, Krujë, Elbasan
May brings reliably mild to warm weather across the central hills; urban terraces in Tirana fill up and day trips to Mount Dajti or the Skanderbeg Museum are pleasant. Occasional thunderstorms start to show up late in the month but generally days are long and dry-light layers and sun protection are all most travelers need. This is a great time for exploring cultural sites and rural markets before peak summer heat.
Vlorë, Himarë, Sarandë, Ksamil
May warms up considerably and the Riviera begins to feel like summer: clear, dry weather with comfortable sea breezes and more cafes, boats and services in full swing. Beach access is good and the water becomes inviting toward the end of the month-popular coves around Himarë fill on sunny weekends. Book accommodation in advance for late May if you want sea-front rooms; bring sun protection and a light wind layer for evenings.
Korçë, Pogradec, Prespa
May sees the eastern highlands warming fast; Korçë is green and pleasantly cool while Pogradec becomes inviting for lakeside strolls and early boat trips. Rivers and small waterfalls run strong after spring melt, making rural drives especially scenic. This is an excellent time for cycling and light trekking before the heat of summer; bring a light jacket for mountain evenings and insect repellent near wetlands.
