Northern Highlands & Lake Region (Kasama, Mbala, Mansa, Mpulungu)
October is the late-dry-season heat surge: afternoons can be hot and dusty across the lower lake plains while the highlands remain more forgiving. Road dust increases and some unsealed tracks become potholed; it’s a good time to see wildlife concentrated at permanent water and for long, clear views from plateau lookouts. Shower anticipation builds as locals prepare for the first rains; bring a cap and dust-proof gear for cameras.
Copperbelt & Northern Plateau (Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola)
October brings more heat and the first sporadic storms that signal the upcoming rainy season; some days are sultry and still. The landscape is parched and dusty before the rains, so pack breathable clothes and strong sun protection. If you’re traveling by road, watch for sudden showers that can make previously smooth dirt tracks slippery.
Lusaka Plateau & Central Province (Lusaka, Kafue, Kabwe)
October is hot and often the driest month - sizzling afternoons are common and thunderstorms may begin as the month closes. The heat makes early-morning or late-afternoon game activities preferable, and some lodges may lower rates before the rains. Bring breathable clothing and protect electronics from dust if travelling overland.
South Luangwa & Eastern Lowlands (Mfuwe, Chipata, Lundazi)
October brings the first strong heat spikes and the occasional early storm; late afternoons may see convection and isolated downpours. Camps prepare for the approaching rains and some remote tracks become fragile as soils dry then crack. If you prefer a quieter, hotter safari and lower prices, late October can be attractive - but be ready for sudden, heavy showers.
Livingstone, Lower Zambezi & Southern Riverlands (Livingstone, Lower Zambezi, Siavonga)
October is the hottest and driest month for the southern riverlands, with blistering afternoons and dusty roads punctuated by occasional early storms. Lower Zambezi wildlife begins to disperse from river margins in anticipation of rains, so sightings can be more spread out but still excellent near permanent pools. Take hydrating gear, light breathable clothing and be prepared for sudden, heavy showers as the month closes.
Western Province & Barotse Floodplain (Mongu, Barotse/Lozi plains)
October is hot and dry across the western plains, with dustier roads and exposed channels before the onset of the rains; some remote areas can be very hot by mid-day. Expect limited shade in the open floodplain and plan early starts for outdoor activities. Water levels are at their lowest and some boat routes used in the wet season are not navigable, so confirm arrangements with guides.
