Northern Highlands & Lake Region (Kasama, Mbala, Mansa, Mpulungu)
August keeps the clear, cool weather; Mbala’s high-altitude sites are crisp and dry and day-trips around Lake Tanganyika are comfortable. This is a top travel month for overland routes into Malawi or for hiking the lesser-known highland tracks without mud. Bring sunscreen and a warm hat for evenings - alpine-style chill is normal before dawn.
Copperbelt & Northern Plateau (Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola)
August warms steadily as the dry season progresses; dusty conditions increase on unpaved roads, especially around mining operations. Daytime heat is comfortable for city tours and day hikes but evenings remain cool. Expect reduced humidity and stable conditions for flights and transfers compared with the wet months.
Lusaka Plateau & Central Province (Lusaka, Kafue, Kabwe)
August is the last of the cool, dry months - sunny days are frequent and dust increases on unsealed roads. This is a great month for river safaris on the Kafue and for game drives as animals remain concentrated. Mornings still require warm clothing but afternoons are pleasant enough for town explorations in Lusaka.
South Luangwa & Eastern Lowlands (Mfuwe, Chipata, Lundazi)
August remains a prime safari month - dry, sunny days and spectacular wildlife visibility at Luangwa’s permanent pools. Rivers are low and walking safaris are safe and widespread; this is peak season for international travellers, so anticipate higher prices and busier camps. Pack a warm jacket for mornings and protective gear for dusty drives.
Livingstone, Lower Zambezi & Southern Riverlands (Livingstone, Lower Zambezi, Siavonga)
August is bright, dry, and a classic safari month - low water channels make some islands accessible and game viewing is excellent. This is one of the most reliable months for walking, canoeing and leopard sightings in the river corridor. Expect high lodge occupancy and plan transfers in advance; dawns remain crisp while afternoons are comfortably warm.
Western Province & Barotse Floodplain (Mongu, Barotse/Lozi plains)
August keeps the dry, cool conditions and the Barotse plain is often at its most accessible by road; exposed grasslands create good walking and short game excursions around permanent waterholes. Dust can be present on roads but overall travel becomes straightforward compared with the wet months. Early bookings are advisable if you aim to connect with local festivals or village visits during the dry season.
