Tihama (Red Sea coastal plain: Al Hudaydah, Mocha, coastal strip)

As the year closes in December, Tihama settles into a complacently warm and dry pattern with bright sunny days and cooler nights that sometimes require a light jacket near the sea. Sea conditions are generally calmer, making small boat outings more dependable than in summer, though local transport limitations continue to affect itineraries. This is a sensible month for a coastal visit if you prefer warmth without extreme heat.

Aden & Southern Coast (Aden, Zinjibar, Al Mukalla shoreline)

December provides pleasantly warm days and cooler nights; the shoreline is at one of its most agreeable points for walking and exploration. Fishermen operate regularly and small-boat trips are generally reliable outside of specific local advisories; crowds remain low and services are usable. Bring layers for evenings and plan coastal sightseeing around the gentle sea breezes.

Highlands (Sana’a, Ibb, Taiz, Dhamar, Jabal An-Nabi Shu’ayb)

December gets cold at altitude with frosty nights and bright sunny days that can feel sharp in the light; higher villages may dip below freezing overnight while Sana’a remains chilly. Short winter showers are possible but infrequent; cultural tours and market visits are comfortable by day with woollen layers for the evenings. If you’re heading for Jabal An-Nabi Shu’ayb or higher ridges, insulate well - nights are genuinely cold and wind can bite.

Hadhramaut Plateau & Eastern Interior (Sayun, Shibam, Marib, Wadi Hadhramaut)

December brings mild days and cool nights that are ideal for sightseeing and walking in the old towns and palm oases; the air is dry and clear with very low risk of rain. Tourist movement and local commerce are steady and outdoor dining in Seiyun is comfortable after sunset. Pack a light sweater for pre-dawn and evening temperatures, but otherwise expect excellent conditions for exploring the plateau.

Socotra Archipelago

December returns reliably calm seas and mild temperatures, making it another highly recommended month for visiting Socotra’s unique landscapes and endemic species. Birdwatching, snorkeling, and climbing to viewpoints are all accessible without the disruptions of the summer winds; local guesthouses operate fully and inter-island connections are more dependable. Pack light clothing, comfortable hiking shoes, and a windbreaker for dawn and dusk conditions.
