Archaeological Site Preclassic and Classic Maya archaeological site near lake

Yaxha is an ancient Maya city and archaeological site in the Petén region, located adjacent to Lake Yaxha. The site contains a ceremonial core of temples, plazas and pyramids set among forested terraces.
Visitors explore restored and unrestored structures, climb certain pyramids for views over the lake and forest canopy, and walk causeways that link plazas and residential groups. The site is known for its water-management features and its lakeside location which distinguished it from some inland Maya centers.
Yaxha was occupied from the Preclassic into the Classic period as part of the broader Classic Maya world and served as a regional ceremonial and population center. Archaeological work has focused on restoring major plazas and documenting inscriptions and architectural phases.
The ruins sit on the southern shore of Lake Yaxha in northeastern Petén, surrounded by low rainforest and wetlands; access is by road from major Petén towns and it is part of a network of Maya sites in the region.
