Wikala and sabil al-Haramayn Monument

Wikala and sabil al-Haramayn combines a commercial wikala with an attached sabil and is located in Cairo’s old market district. The name indicates the complex incorporates a public fountain alongside merchant facilities.

Architectural organization reflects the dual role: a central courtyard with storage and upper lodging typical of wikalas alongside a sabil opening in the street-facing façade for public water access. Decorative elements tend to concentrate at the sabil while the rest of the building remains utilitarian.

The compound was created to support trade and provide a civic service in the form of potable water; these ensembles often continued in mixed commercial use and occasionally underwent restorations. The structure remains part of the dense historic streetscape.
