Khan el-Khalili is a historic market quarter in the heart of Islamic Cairo, noted as one of the city’s principal traditional souks. It functions as a long-standing commercial and social hub within Cairo’s old city.

Shops and narrow alleyways contain a wide range of goods from metalwork and jewellery to spices and textiles, with many small workshops and storefronts clustered along pedestrian lanes. Hundreds of stalls and shops line the area, and there are cafés and stalls selling traditional foods and souvenirs.

The market developed as part of Cairo’s medieval urban fabric and expanded over centuries under successive local rulers, becoming the commercial heart of the eastern quarter of historic Cairo. Its layout and function reflect continuous use as a bazaar and meeting place through the Ottoman and modern periods.

It’s reached easily by taxi or microbus from central Cairo; once in the Al‑Hussein/Al‑Azhar area the market is a short walk from the surrounding streets. Public minibuses and taxis are the common ways visitors arrive from downtown Cairo.

• Go late afternoon into evening when the bazaar's atmosphere, lighting and cafés come alive-this is the best time to experience the street musicians and shopkeepers after the daytime heat subsides.
• Start your visit from the Al-Azhar/Al-Hussein mosque side and work through the side alleys to discover quieter lanes, historic coffeehouses (for example the long-running El Fishawy) and artisanal workshops that many tourists bypass.
• Avoid the busiest central aisles at midday; haggle politely on prices and, if you want calmer browsing, visit on a weekday morning before tour groups arrive.
