Volubilis
Ruins Roman archaeological site with extensive mosaics
Volubilis holds extensive Roman ruins outside Meknes-mosaic floors, public buildings and a triumphal arch-providing a clear example of Roman urban planning in North Africa.
Volubilis is an archaeological site in northern Morocco containing the remains of a Roman-era city and its surrounding settlement, noted for extensive mosaics and monumental architecture. The site reflects Roman urban planning and provincial administration in North Africa.
Excavated areas reveal a forum, basilica, public baths, private houses with mosaic floors and vestiges of city walls and gates; these elements are among the site’s principal highlights. Visitors commonly view large mosaic panels and the remains of civic buildings while walking the paved street grid.
The site developed from local Mauretanian settlements into a Romanized urban centre during the Republic and Imperial periods, flourishing particularly in the 1st through 3rd centuries CE; later occupation continued in subsequent centuries. Archaeological work since the 20th century has focused on excavation and conservation of the surviving mosaics and structures.
Volubilis lies on a fertile plain north of the Middle Atlas foothills, near the modern town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and northeast of Meknes, within the Fès-Meknès administrative region.
- Roman urban fabric: Archaeological remains include extensive mosaic pavements, public baths and civic buildings that illustrate Volubilis's role as a Roman administrative centre.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its well-preserved Roman remains and as the best-preserved archaeological site in Morocco.
What to See #
- Forum and mosaics: Large private and public buildings arranged around a forum and street grid, notable for well-preserved mosaic floors dating to the Roman imperial period.
- Triumphal arch and gates: A triumphal arch and city gates marking the main approach and visible remains of monumental public architecture from the Roman era.

Tips for Visiting Volubilis #
- Plan an early-morning or late-afternoon visit to avoid the midday heat and to get better light on the mosaics; Volubilis is exposed and can be very hot in summer.
