About Ibn Danan Synagogue

The Ibn Danan Synagogue is a historic Jewish house of worship located in the Mellah of Fez el-Jdid in Fez, Morocco. It is known for its preserved interior woodwork, carved Torah ark and an adjoining ritual bath (mikveh).

The small, inward-looking prayer hall retains antique painted and carved wood fittings and decorative elements that reflect Jewish artisanal traditions in Morocco. The name commemorates the Ibn Danan family and the building has been the subject of conservation and restoration efforts to preserve its fabric and furnishings.

The synagogue was established by the Jewish community of Fez during the early modern period and served that community for centuries before the dramatic demographic changes of the 20th century. How to Get to Ibn Danan Synagogue

The synagogue sits in the Mellah district of Fes el-Jdid. From the Bou Jeloud gate or from the main Fez medina, expect a 10-20 minute walk; ask any local for “Mellah” or “Ibn Danan” and they will point to the narrow streets. Taxis can drop visitors at the edge of the medina; from there the lanes are pedestrian only.

Tips for Visiting Ibn Danan Synagogue

  • Go early in the morning when the Mellah is quiet to better see the painted ceilings and the mikveh stair without crowds.
  • Ask at the synagogue's small office for permission before photographing the interior-congregational use and conservation needs sometimes restrict cameras.
  • Notice the worn groove on the threshold and the low, narrow stair that leads to the ritual bath-the traces of everyday Jewish life here are small and intimate.
