Grand Mosque of Meknes

The Grand Mosque of Meknes is the main mosque within the historic medina of Meknes in northern Morocco and serves as a central religious and community landmark. The mosque sits within the dense urban fabric of the old city and is part of Meknes’s historic religious complex.

As with other principal Moroccan mosques, it historically functioned as a communal place for Friday prayers and civic gatherings and is integrated with adjacent urban features. Architectural elements typical of Moroccan mosque design are evident in its minaret and courtyard layout.

The mosque has been part of Meknes’s medina for centuries and contributes to the area’s historical identity; conservation and changes over time reflect urban development within the medina.

Located in Meknes’s old city, the Grand Mosque is close to the medina’s main thoroughfares and other historic monuments that together form the town’s UNESCO-buffered heritage area.

Meknes’s Grand Mosque is located in the old medina near Place el-Hedim and the city centre. It is a short walk from Meknes’s main bus and train stations (typically 10-20 minutes on foot) and easily reached by local taxi into the medina.

• Non-Muslims are normally not permitted inside Meknes's Grand Mosque, so plan to view and photograph the building's exterior and minaret from nearby public squares and terraces.
• Position yourself in the late-afternoon light for warm tones on the minaret and exterior decoration; many of the best views are from cafes and vantage points around Place el-Hedim.
• Combine an exterior visit with nearby sites (Bab Mansour, Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail) when the mosque is busiest-this helps avoid peak crowds focused solely on the mosque area.
