Valaste Falls
Waterfall Estonia's highest waterfall with nearby coastal cliffs
Valaste Falls near Estonia’s Baltic coast is the country’s tallest waterfall; visitors use stairways and viewpoints to see the cascade and walk nearby coastal trails.
Valaste Falls is a waterfall on the northern Estonian coast in Ida-Viru County and is Estonia’s tallest waterfall at about 30 metres. It drops over the limestone of the Baltic Klint.
The falls are reached by short walks from roadside parking and several viewing platforms have been constructed to give clear views of the drop. The cliff and falls are photographed frequently and visited on day trips from nearby towns.
The waterfall is the result of water flowing over the limestone cliff of the Baltic Klint; seasonal and weather variations influence flow and ice formation in winter. Infrastructure for visitors has been added in recent decades to improve access and viewpoints.
Valaste Falls sits on the Ontika/Valaste section of the northern Estonian limestone escarpment, close to coastal settlements in Ida-Viru County and reachable by road from the regional centres.
- Height and geology: At roughly 30 metres high, it is the tallest waterfall in Estonia and sits on the Baltic Klint limestone escarpment.
How to Get to Valaste Falls #
Valaste Falls (Valaste juga) is right beside the Tallinn-Narva main road (E20/A1) on Estonia’s northern coast in Ida-Viru County. By car follow the E20/A1 toward Narva and watch for signs to Valaste/Toila; there is a roadside parking/viewpoint and the falls are a short walk from the car park.
You can also reach the area by regional bus services that run along the Tallinn-Narva corridor to nearby settlements (Toila/Aseri) and then walk or take a short taxi ride to the falls.
Tips for Visiting Valaste Falls #
- Visit Valaste Falls in the early morning or late afternoon outside peak summer coach hours for softer light on the cliff face and far fewer visitors, especially on weekdays.
- Use the main car park and follow the clearly marked path to the upper viewing platform first; many visitors stop there but the steep staircase to the lower viewpoint (may be slippery or closed in icy conditions) gives a very different angle and is worth the short descent when open.
- Plan for seasonal variation in flow and scenery: spring thaw and after rainy periods produce a stronger cascade, while autumn offers striking foliage - check local conditions if you're aiming for the best water flow.
Best Time to Visit Valaste Falls #
