Ivangorod Fortress is a medieval fortress on the eastern bank of the Narva River in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, facing the Estonian town of Narva. It was established in the late 15th century and has long served as a strategic fortification on this river frontier.

The fortress complex includes thick stone walls, towers and an inner citadel designed for defense along the river corridor. Its position opposite Narva Castle makes the pair of fortifications a prominent historical border ensemble visible from both sides of the river.

Built by order of the Grand Prince of Moscow in 1492, the fortress has undergone repairs and modifications over the centuries as military technology and border arrangements changed. It has been used historically as a military stronghold and administrative center for the area.

How to Get to Ivangorod Fortress

Ivangorod Fortress sits on the Russian bank of the Narva River opposite Narva, Estonia. From St. Petersburg drive east on the A180/E20 toward Ivangorod - the distance is roughly 120-150 km by road (around a two‑hour drive depending on traffic). From Narva (Estonia) the fortress is a short walk from the city centre across the river; note that crossing the border between Estonia and Russia requires passing the appropriate border controls.

Tips for Visiting Ivangorod Fortress

  • You can get excellent views of Ivangorod Fortress from the Estonian side (Narva/Narva-Jõesuu) without crossing the border-this is the easiest way to photograph the fortress and the Narva riverfront without Russian visa formalities.
  • If you plan to visit the fortress interior in Ivangorod, go early in the day and bring valid travel documents-entering the Russian side requires passing border controls, so check visa requirements and opening hours before you travel.
