Uttarakhand holds Himalayan pilgrimage sites (Haridwar, Rishikesh, Badrinath, Kedarnath), hill stations like Nainital and Mussoorie, Jim Corbett National Park and trekking routes. Pilgrims, trekkers and rafters come for mountains and sacred rivers.
Uttarakhand at a Glance#
Known For: Hindu pilgrimage and Himalayan treks - Home to Char Dham shrines and high-altitude trails.

Gateway City: Dehradun - Jolly Grant airport, road link to hill towns.
Why Visit Uttarakhand#
Ganga Aarti
Witness the nightly Ganga Aarti in Haridwar or Rishikesh for an intimate, sensory ritual of lamps, mantras and river offerings. Arrive early for riverside vantage points and avoid packaged ‘tour’ performances; the authentic aarti is a communal experience with pilgrims and yogis. It’s spiritual intensity without theatrical staging.
Valley of Flowers
Trek the Valley of Flowers from Govindghat to see alpine meadows carpeted with endemic blooms during late July-August. Trails pass through quaint villages and high meadows with Himalayan blue poppies and elusive pheasants; weather can change fast, so pack layers and a local guide. It’s floral spectacle and high-altitude solitude.
Rishikesh Adventure
Rishikesh mixes yoga retreats with serious white-water rafting on the Ganges and cliffside jumps at Shivpuri. Book reputable outfitters for Class III-IV rapids and combine river days with evening yoga on the banks. Don’t expect resort polish - this is adrenaline and ashram culture in the same town.
Jim Corbett
Jim Corbett National Park offers classic tiger safaris in sal forests and riverine loops; early morning drives give the best chance for big-cat sightings. Stay in forest lodges near Ramnagar and combine jeep safaris with birdwatching and river walks. It’s one of India’s more accessible wildlife experiences for first-time safari-goers.
Char Dham Route
The high-altitude Char Dham pilgrimage (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) tests both faith and endurance, with sacred shrines set against stark mountain backdrops. Roads are seasonal and crowds swell in summer; prepare for cold nights and limited services at higher shrines. For many travellers it’s as much a landscape journey as a spiritual one.
Who's Uttarakhand For?#
Riverside stays in Rishikesh and quiet hill stations like Nainital or Mussoorie offer candlelit dinners, yoga mornings and Himalayan viewpoints for romantic getaways.
Jim Corbett National Park safaris, gentle lakes at Nainital, and easy nature walks provide family-friendly wildlife and outdoor experiences with lodges suited to kids.
Trekking bases at Joshimath, Valley of Flowers and Kuari Pass attract backpackers seeking Himalayan trails and budget guesthouses; expect seasonal crowds on popular treks.
Outside Dehradun, reliable high-speed internet is rare; towns geared to pilgrims and trekkers aren’t set up for long-term remote work or coworking needs.
Try simple Garhwali and Kumaoni dishes, local wildflowers’ honey, and mountain teahouse snacks; it’s more rustic and homely than haute cuisine.
Top-tier Himalayan adventure: white-water rafting on the Ganga in Rishikesh, multi-day treks, and skiing at Auli make Uttarakhand a playground for outdoors enthusiasts.
Nightlife is minimal and often curtailed by religious sensibilities around Rishikesh and Haridwar; expect quiet evenings focused on spiritual or family activities.
From Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi to dense pine forests and alpine meadows, Uttarakhand is a premier destination for high-altitude flora, fauna and mountain landscapes.

Uttarakhand ranges from lower Himalayan foothills to high alpine terrain, so conditions vary sharply by elevation: warm, clear months in spring and early summer and a heavy monsoon from mid-June to September, followed by cold, snowy winters at higher altitudes. The main travel windows are March-June for pilgrimages and lower-elevation trekking and September-November for post‑monsoon clarity and falls.
March - June
50-85°F / 10-30°C
Spring and early summer bring clear skies and warm, pleasant conditions in valleys and mid-hill areas; this is the main window for pilgrimages and lower- to mid-altitude treks. Many mountain passes and high-altitude routes open up during this period.
September - November
40-75°F / 4-24°C
Post-monsoon months offer stable weather, clear mountain views and drier trails, making them excellent for trekking and sightseeing. Temperatures decline rapidly into November, so prepare for colder nights.
July - February
20-90°F / -7-32°C
Monsoon months (mid-June to September) bring heavy rain, landslide risk and limited access in many areas; winter (December-February) brings heavy snow and closed high-altitude routes. Travel to remote mountain areas is most difficult during this long low period.

Getting to & Around Uttarakhand#
Uttarakhand is a mountainous Himalayan state where many destinations sit on steep, narrow roads; travel times are longer than map distances suggest. While lower towns are connected by rail and sealed highways, higher alpine and pilgrimage sites often require taxis, shared jeeps or trekking for the final approach and can be seasonally disrupted.
Most travelers reach Uttarakhand via Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport (DED) or by train to Dehradun, Haridwar or Kathgodam (for Nainital). From Delhi the drive or overnight train to Dehradun/Haridwar typically takes 5-8 hours depending on traffic and destination in the state.
Domestic Flights
The main airport is Dehradun Jolly Grant (DED), which has flights to Delhi and other Indian metros; Pantnagar (PGH) handles limited regional flights. Flights are often the fastest option from Delhi for reaching the lower Himalayan foothills.
Trains
Key rail gateways are Dehradun and Haridwar; the broad‑gauge line to Kathgodam (KGM) serves Nainital and the Kumaon foothills. Indian Railways services are useful for lower‑altitude access but do not reach many higher mountain towns.
Buses
State and private buses (including Volvo coaches from Delhi) connect Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Nainital; roads into higher valleys use shared buses and jeeps. Journeys on hill roads are slower due to winding alignments and traffic.
Taxis & shared jeeps
Shared taxis and private hires are common for the last‑mile links to hill towns such as Mussoorie, Auli or Khirsu - drivers experienced with hairpin roads are recommended. Many higher routes are narrow and steep, and can be seasonally affected by landslides or snow.
Where to Stay in Uttarakhand#
Uttarakhand’s accommodation ranges from budget lodges and ashram rooms in Rishikesh and Haridwar to mountain guesthouses, dharamshalas and trekking lodges across Garhwal and Kumaon. Options multiply in tourist hubs but become sparse and basic on remote trails and high-altitude routes.
₹200-1,000 / night budget
Rishikesh (Laxman Jhula area), Haridwar and small pilgrimage towns offer inexpensive guesthouses and dharamshalas with shared facilities. Ideal for pilgrims and budget travelers; facilities are utilitarian but centrally located.
₹1,500-5,000 / night mid-range
Nainital, Mussoorie and Dehradun provide a fuller hotel range-family-run hotels to boutique hill resorts. Book summers and school holidays early as demand rises for cooler hill stations.
₹600-3,000 / night including guided options
Around Uttarkashi, Auli and the Kumaon hills, trekking lodges and organized camping are common for multi-day treks. Expect basic facilities and need to arrange porters or permits for higher trails.
₹200-2,500 / night
Rishikesh is known for numerous ashrams and yoga teacher-training centers offering simple rooms and communal meals. Good for short stays and immersion; check schedules and rules before arrival.
₹500-1,800 / night
In Kumaon villages near Almora and Kausani, family homestays provide local meals and cultural insight. They are excellent for slower travel and trekking base villages.
