Garhwal division Area

Garhwal division is an administrative division in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, encompassing a substantial portion of the western and central Himalaya. It includes both lower hill plains and high mountain valleys and passes.

The division contains many long-established hill settlements, pilgrimage routes and mountain landscapes used for trekking and seasonal pastoralism. Dehradun is the administrative centre for the division and the principal urban hub for services and transport.

Historically the Garhwal area developed as a cluster of principalities and mountain communities; modern administrative structures were established under British and later Indian governance to manage the mountainous districts now grouped within the division.

Geographically the division occupies the northwestern portion of Uttarakhand, bordering higher Himalayan ranges to the north and river valleys to the south, providing access to several well-known mountain corridors and pilgrimage routes.
