How to Get to Perth#

Perth (Scotland) is well connected by rail - Perth station is on main ScotRail routes - and served by the nearest major airports at Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA). Trains are often the fastest, most reliable way into the city from other Scottish centres.

By Air

Edinburgh Airport (EDI): Edinburgh is the nearest major international airport with frequent connections. From the airport take the tram (or bus) into the city centre (Edinburgh Waverley/Haymarket) and then a ScotRail train to Perth; the tram takes about 30-35 minutes to the centre and trains Edinburgh Waverley→Perth take roughly 1h10-1h30 depending on service.

Glasgow Airport (GLA): Glasgow Airport is another common option. From the airport use the Glasgow Airport Express or local transfer into Glasgow city centre (Glasgow Central/Queen Street) then catch a ScotRail service to Perth; total travel time including transfer is typically around 1h30-2h depending on connections.

By Train & Bus

Train: Perth railway station (Perth) is on the main Highland/Mainline routes with regular ScotRail services to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. Typical journey times are Edinburgh ~1h10-1h30 and Glasgow ~1h10; fares vary by time and advance-booking.

Bus: Stagecoach and Scottish Citylink run regional buses and coaches serving Perth from surrounding towns and cities. Local bus services (Stagecoach in Perthshire and local operators) cover suburbs and parks; buses are good for short hops and for routes not well served by rail.

How to Get Around Perth#

Perth is easiest to reach and navigate by train for intercity travel and on foot or by local bus/taxi within the town. For exploring the wider region a rental car is the most flexible option.

  • ScotRail (trains) (£8-£30+) - Perth station has frequent ScotRail services to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness. Trains are usually comfortable and punctual; book Advance fares for the best prices on intercity legs and use off-peak/anytime tickets for flexibility.
  • Stagecoach / local buses (£1.80-£8) - Local Stagecoach buses and regional coach operators cover Perthshire and link smaller towns to Perth. Buses are useful for places the rail network doesn’t reach directly and for short local journeys; timetables are less frequent evenings and Sundays.
  • Coach (Citylink/intercity) (£8-£25) - Scottish Citylink and regional coaches provide direct services to Perth from Inverness, Aberdeen and other long-distance routes. Coaches can be cheaper than trains but slower depending on the route and stops.
  • Taxi / ride-hail (£5-£25) - Taxis and ride-hail services operate across Perth; handy for late-night or luggage-heavy travel. Expect fares from the station to city-centre hotels to be modest but variable by time of day and distance.
  • Car rental (£25-£70 per day) - Renting a car gives freedom to explore Perthshire and the Highlands; parking in central Perth is available but can be limited at peak times. Roads north into the Highlands become single-track in places, so plan extra time.
  • Walking - Perth’s central area is compact and very walkable: attractions, restaurants and shops are concentrated around the river and high street, making walking the best option for short trips.
