Loch Leven is a shallow freshwater loch in Perth and Kinross, central Scotland, lying close to the town of Kinross. It is noted for its historical island castle and important wetland habitats.

Recreation includes birdwatching, walking along shoreline trails and boat trips to the island castle. The loch’s wetlands are internationally important for waterfowl and attract nature observers throughout the year.

The island castle in the loch has medieval origins and is historically famous as the place where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567 and compelled to abdicate. The surrounding wetlands have long been recognised for their ecological value and are protected as a reserve.

Loch Leven lies in central Scotland near the town of Kinross in Perth and Kinross. The loch is surrounded by low agricultural land and wetlands and is accessible by local roads.

Loch Leven sits immediately beside the town of Kinross. From Kinross town centre the loch shore and Kinross Pier are a short walk (around 5-15 minutes) along local footpaths; seasonal boat trips run from the pier to Loch Leven Castle on the island. If driving, follow the local roads into Kinross (the town is the closest hub) and park in the town/visitor car parks before walking to the shore.

• Visit early morning (first light) during spring and autumn for the best bird activity and calm water - the RSPB reserve comes alive then and you'll get clearer views and quieter paths.
• Use the RSPB Loch Leven Visitor Centre at Vane Farm as your base: it's the hub for information, hides and the seasonal boat service to Loch Leven Castle (boat runs only at certain times of year).
• Most visitors only see the castle island; walk the full Loch Leven Heritage Trail or stop at the reserve viewing hides on the quieter shore to see migrating waterfowl and wintering whooper swans that many miss.
