Ucanal
Archaeological Site Ancient Maya archaeological site in Petén
Classic Maya site in Petén with plazas, stelae and defensive earthworks; archaeologists and visitors access the ruins by road from Flores and explore surrounding jungle trails.
Ucanal is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala, occupied during the Classic period (c. 250-900 CE). It is one of several medium-sized political centers in the southern Maya lowlands.
Ruined plazas, temple platforms and carved stone monuments form the main visible remains at the site. Trails among earthworks and masonry give a compact footprint that can be explored on foot in a few hours.
The site was built and occupied by the Maya and functioned as a local political and ceremonial center during the Classic period. Like many lowland Maya cities it declined and was largely abandoned before or during the Terminal Classic.
Ucanal sits within the lowland tropical forest of Petén in northern Guatemala. It lies in a rural portion of the department and is reached by unpaved roads from nearby towns in the region.
