Tus is an ancient city site in Razavi Khorasan province in northeastern Iran, known for its long history and cultural monuments. The area is best known as the traditional home of the Persian poet Ferdowsi and for surviving archaeological remains.
The modern site contains commemorative and archaeological points of interest including the Ferdowsi Mausoleum, remnants of brick buildings and tombs, and scattered archaeological mounds. Visitors typically combine a stop at the mausoleum with viewing nearby ruins and monuments.
Tus was an important regional centre in antiquity and the medieval period; it features layers of occupation from pre-Islamic through Islamic times. The city was significantly affected by the Mongol invasions of the early 13th century and later evolved into the set of ruins and memorials seen today.
The site lies in the plains near Mashhad in northeastern Iran, roughly 20 kilometres northwest of Mashhad city, set in an agricultural landscape with the modern town and visitor facilities nearby.

- Don't skip the Haruniyeh Dome and the smaller archaeological mounds around Tus - they are often overlooked by visitors who only view the Ferdowsi complex.
- Plan Tus as a half-day trip from Mashhad (about 20-30 km); travel from Mashhad early on weekdays to avoid the higher local visitor numbers on Fridays.
